Someone finally figured it out. The line to Cumberland is a good idea. Far from being done, at least all the movement is going in the right direction. The rights of way are being taken and alternate routes, if needed, are being secured. I wish the village were able to take a more active role in this, but since it is Cumberland's line to lay to us they have made the decisions on route, engineers, and all the other technical aspects going into this project. And, like all projects, it comes with headaches, but Denny Unklesbey, the village administrator for Cumberland, has been up to the task. He has worked tirelessly on this project and with some help from Tom McVicker and Randy Mercer; I think they can see the light at the end of the tunnel. That's not to say there won't be more problems. I read the article in the paper last week about going through Fairview and how Mr. Norman is opposed to it. There will be others I am sure, but unless you plan to go out to the woods or through swamps you will encounter homes and others along the path. It's a matter of working things out before you start poking each other in the eye that's how you get it accomplished. Since we started working as the "operator" for the Cumberland system, our guys have installed additional line on Iowa road (10 new customers), and fixed a line of about six hundred feet that provides the loop for the village that has been out of service for many years. Additionally, the new line from Byesville to Cumberland has been approved to go up Garvin Hill School Road (25 new customers). At this rate, the new customer base will be able to pay the bill for what Cumberland had to borrow. (Our thoughts all along.) But, there are those that will say, "What's in it for Byesville?" The answer is clear. Without spending so much as a dime, we are expanding our water sales base. We have said that for a long time (since we built the new plant), and guess what, it is paying dividends precisely as we said it would. In the near future, look for results from the new "summit" negotiations with the City of Cambridge. A broad new view of complementing each other rather than competing with each other is what we are working on. This is a marked new step in establishing additional water and sewer capabilities for both communities and translates into savings for you the customer. It has taken several long years to get to this point and many hours of working together but as that A Team guy said, "I love it when a plan comes together." Hopefully, years from now, especially after the economy starts growing again, everyone can look back and appreciate what all this planning has done. We are far from being out of the woods, but like Cumberland, we can see the light at the end of the tunnel. Comments
