BYESVILLE --Enough horsing around.

The Meadowbrook High football team came out of The Corral with some "umph", taking care of business and defeating East Central Ohio League opponent Claymont in a 41-14 rout.

Meadowbrook (2-7, 2-3 ECOL) got the job done with a rampant offense that churned out 391 yards and 20 first downs, and a smothering defense that gave Claymont (2-7, 1-5 ECOL) only 44 stripes and two first downs.

In no-nonsense fashion, Meadowbrook's Josh Riggans plunged through a gap in the line on the third play from scrimmage and raced 50 yards to score on the first Colt possession. The point-after kick failed, but the Colts were on the board with 8:45 left in the first quarter with a 6-0 lead.

The Colts' defense held Claymont to a three-and-out on the ensuing possession, and took the punt at the Meadowbrook 31.

From there, junior signal-caller Jared George marched his team down the field for a 12-play, 60-yard drive, capped on an option play in which George made a last-second pitch to Daulton Dolan, who snatched the pigskin and scampered 19 yards to paydirt. German exchange student Lucas Berger's kick was good, giving Meadowbrook a 13-0 advantage with 1:03 left in the initial frame.

Another three-and-out from the stingy Colts' defense gave the Meadowbrook offense the ball on its 32.

When it looked as though the drive had sputtered following a penalty which set up third-and-16, George dropped a rainbow pass into the arms of Jeramie Neff and the senior speedster zipped to the end zone for a 60-yard TD. Berger nailed the extra-point kick and the hosts enjoyed a 20-0 lead at the 8:01 mark in the second period.

Claymont was not stunned beyond recovery by the flurry of Colt scores, as Kyle Garbrandt showed when he took the ensuing kickoff 78 yards for a touchdown. Clay Kutcher tacked on the PAT kick for the visitors to close the gap to 20-7 with 7:49 remaining before halftime.

At the beginning of the third frame, the Mustangs crossed the goal line once more, this time as Aaron Cox snared a George pass and returned it 60 yards to paydirt. Trent Johnson added the point-after kick and the visitors were creeping up, 20-14.

The Colts' offense kicked into gear on the next drive, charging down the field for another long drive.

Faced with fourth -and-eight, George again converted when he hit Dolan on the right sideline to keep the drive alive. Two plays later, George dove in to the end zone from a yard out and Berger tallied his third PAT kick of the night, giving the Colts a 27-14 lead with 2:18 remaining in the third quarter.

The tightening of the Colts' defense after that kept Claymont from gaining any more first downs and set up a pair of Colt touchdowns to ice the game.

The first came when George dumped a pass to Kyle Roberts for an eight-yard TD to finish off a 14-play, 60-yard drive at the 6:27 mark of the final frame. Berger was again accurate with the point-after kick, setting the score at 34-14.

The next score occurred when George kept the ball on an option and turned upfield, cutting his way to the goal line and dragging Claymont defenders into the end zone from 33 yards out. Berger booted his final PAT kick of the night, and the score rested at 41-14 with 3:03 left in the contest.

"We feel we can move the ball," Meadowbrook coach Mitch Bendle said. "Penalties have hurt us all year, and the difference tonight is that we didn't have the penalties.

"We got a couple backs that can run, and our quarterback can run, and our receivers can catch," Bendle continued. "If we can sustain our drives, we are a hard team to stop.

"Our defense played a real good ball game up front, and it helped to get the ball back in our offense's hands," the Meadowbrook coach concluded.

The offense was led by Riggans on the ground with 126 yards on 26 totes, while George passed for 146 yards and two TDs by going 8-of-12. Neff snagged four aerials for 106 stripes and George picked up 72 more markers on the ground. George also recorded a sack on defense.

Claymont's Garbrandt carried five times for 18 yards and quarterback Nick Merrick went 3-of-12 for 42 yards.
