Around the Neighborhood

The election is upon us again. Like the fall leaves, campaigns generate signs, trinkets and fliers in many yards along with people showing up to promise to do the work for you. First and foremost in the minds of the candidate is to win. Some have high objectives and want to commit to public service. Others have single-mindedness and want to protect that idea in event it is ever threatened. In any event, it is up to the candidate to get the message across.

Byesville has been a hot bed of political activity each and every year. Having been through some of the most difficult campaigns in my life, I can testify to the tenacity of some. This year seems to be no different as eight candidates line up to fill four seats on village council. There are some that I have served with and others I have talked to or wrote about in my articles. Some seem supportive of being positive, others have talked negative while campaigning. Some have campaigned it alone, while others have teamed up with others who assure them the win. But all have been lively and been involved. I like that as it is the spirit of the American way. Even in this small town tides ebb and flow on the voter.

Having been in office, my anticipation is about whom I will be serving with after the first. Some agendas have already been hatched, while others have been tabled until after the election. (Remember everyone wants to be elected.) The fun times always start shortly after an election. I suspect nothing less this time. Just follow along in The Jeffersonian as we ebb and flow before the first of the year or shortly thereafter, the dance will begin again.

I am sure I will be dedicating several articles to the business of council again as the course of agendas begin to be pushed through. Like all elected officials, the first several days are the most important and the likelihood of the public forgetting in four years is much greater (that's why things are tabled right now).

But, as we approach the new year, my hope like always, is that each person remembers that we were elected for a purpose and each vote that they take impacts others. Playing nice in the sand box with others generally means we are working together for the positive.

Next week, I hope to relay some significant matters on economic development to you. Seems like I have been going to meeting after meeting with local industrial interests and others planning events for the near and long future. Laying ground work so whenever we do get out of this economic slump this area can rebound as quick as possible. Being unemployed or underemployed is never any fun so we are working hard today to make sure good announcements are in short order. Keep tuned in.
