Around the Neighborhood

After an enjoyable Thanksgiving at our house with 25 family members in attendance, my wife is now focusing on that money-spending chore to personally save the economy. My thoughts each year as she shops for Christmas.

This year brings a different sort of animal into the equation as she now has Internet and has found out what pay pal is. No longer can I grimace as I write out the check or give her the discerning eye because I think it costs too much. She has out flanked me finally.

My feet are happy about it and my time is freed up, but the joy of being the first Grinch at Christmas is part of what I am all about. (Not that I dislike Christmas, I love it.) The yearly bah-humbug makes me feel good and like most married couples, we thread the balance between total blowout and chaos from buying for the little ones, to me pinching the pocketbook too much. That's married life.

But, she is showing me great restraint in her purchases this year on the Internet. And, like the article of last week that I wrote, we are prevailing in rational thinking on spending for Christmas. Many in our community will be in need this year so we have to think of them and participate in helping out. Councilman Jackson is planning a couple of events on the calendar for December and councilman Long was quick to point out that the rotary dinners are 240 plus this year. That's a lot and whatever is donated here locally stays local. I am glad Jay and Bob are looking out for those that are in need and ask you to help them help others.

On the note of rational thinkers, I see the union and council coming to terms on the new contract. Points put forward (that I can't talk about because they were in executive session) were valid and made good sense. I think when this all gets completed everyone involved in this needs a big slap on the back for a job well thought through and presented. Both council and the union were great to work with this time. Seems my wife is right when she tells me to play nice in the sand box.
