BYESVILLE - Meadowbrook Middle School student Dylan Wood captured the Guernsey County Spelling Bee Wednesday night by correctly spelling "renovate" in the 30th round.

Wood correctly spelled "rupture" to earn a shot at the title and a spot in the regional spelling bee in March.

Robert Bates, a Buckeye Trail Middle School student, finished as runner-up. Classmates Brennan Clay, Lacritia Oberrath and Sara Vargo round out the top five after the three spellers were eliminated in the fifth round.

Wood missed three opportunities to capture the title prior to the final round, while Bates was unsuccessful in a single bid to win the bee.

With the spelling bee lasting more than two hours, moderator Stevie Fairchild of the Ohio Valley Educational Service Center on three occasions had to seek additional words from the judges to continue the marathon competition.

Serving as judges were Penny Boggs, Talented & Gifted coordinator for the OVESC; Betsy Taylor, teacher at Cambridge High School; and Rick Stillion of The Daily Jeffersonian.

J.P. Wray was the emcee for the event.
