BYESVILLE - Village officials, elated last week because they thought the village was in line to receive additional federal stimulus money, learned this week that the village will not receive the extra money. The Ohio Environmental Protection Agency official who had informed the village of the supposed windfall made a mistake, Village Administrator Randy Mercer reported Wednesday. "The $386,499.31 was announced in error," Mercer reported to council. "The village will not be receiving those additional funds. The EPA apologized for the mistake." The money would have been applied to the project to build a new wastewater treatment plant. Mercer said he had told the EPA official that village officials were disappointed but could understand how an error could be made. He did take the opportunity, however, to point out that the village has been receiving a lot of bad luck with the loss of many jobs over the past two years. "She was empathetic and sympathetic," Mercer said, "and she said that, if she could give us more money, she would." The village, under Ohio EPA findings that mandate an upgrade of the wastewater plant, have undertaken a project to construct a new facility at a Hope Avenue site. The new plant, the John Smalley Wastewater Treatment Facility, has a scheduled completion date in the spring of 2011. However, the project is ahead of schedule and may be completed as early as November. Comments
