WARSAW -- Getting the jump on yet another projected snow storm, the Meadowbrook High Colts traveled to River View a day early on, and made the trip a success with a 51-37 victory over the host Black Bears.

The visiting Colts galloped out to an 11-5 lead after the opening quarter, and extended their advantage to 27-15 at the halftime break with a 16-10 scoring edge in the second stanza.

To open the second half, the Black Bears attempted to climb back into the contest, using a 14-10 edge in the third quarter to pull within 37-29 entering the fourth quarter. But Meadowbrook held on for the win, with a 14-8 advantage in the final eight minutes of action.

Jeramie Neff pumped in a game-high 17 points to pace Meadowbrook (11-5), while adding double figure support was Ethan Shriver with 12 points and Steve Minyo with 10.

River View (2-12) was led by Michael Adams with 10 points, including a pair of three-pointers while Dustin Langley finished with nine.

Shriver pulled down nine rebounds and Minyo six to lead the Colts' 27-18 rebounding advantage, Jared Miller and David Massie each recorded five boards for the Black Bears.

DOVER --True to their namesake, the Dover High Tornadoes swept past Meadowbrook in an East Central Ohio League boys' basketball matchup, 56-45.

Using a whirlwind of deliberate offense and constricting defense, Dover (15-1, 9-1 ECOL) beat Meadowbrook (11-5, 5-5 ECOL) at its game.

The contest was close at the outset as the Tornadoes jumped out to a 13-8 lead after the first quarter. Meadowbrook's Logan Pepper buzzed in a three-pointer within the first minute and Stephen Minyo scored four in the frame. Dover's Anthony Monaco began a solid night with five points.

The Colts opened the second period with a pair of layups from Devon Cork and Ethan Shriver before the Tornadoes responded with an eight-point streak, giving the hosts a 21-12 advantage with 2:03 remaining in the half.

Meadowbrook's Alex Robertson scored underneath on a post move, and Shriver buried a last-second heave from 35 feet out to cut into the gap and leave the score 21-17 at intermission.

Robertson started an aggressive third quarter for the Colts with a three-point play after a drive to the bucket, but Dover answered with a seven-point run including five points from Monaco, setting the score at 28-20 with 4:51 left in the frame.

A Shriver layup looked to give the Colts another spark, but again Monaco came back with a drive followed by a jumpshot from Ian Drapcho, increasing the Tornadoes' lead to 32-22 at the 2:20 mark.

After being unusually quiet for the first three periods, Meadowbrook senior Jeramie Neff caught fire in the final frame, scoring 11 of his 13 points.

He started at the 7:24 juncture, sinking a "triple" from the wing. It was not until the 48-second mark that he connected on his next "trey", while Dover had increased its lead to 51-43.

Neff knocked down another mid-range jumpshot, but Dover was already setting up camp on the foul line, as the Colts were forced to foul in desperation.

A 10-of-13 effort from the charity stripe helped the hosts cruise on to an 11-point victory.

Meadowbrook coach Keith Arnold pointed to two main factors in the outcome.

"Execution and discipline," Arnold stated. "We just have to get better at those two things. Effort was excellent.

"In the first half we might have played a little bit not-to-lose instead of to-win," the Meadowbrook mentor continued. "In the second half, we came out more aggressive. When we do that, we are pretty good."

Leading the Colts was Neff with 13 points. Shriver scored nine markers, pulled down five rebounds, and rejected two shots; Robertson tallied nine counters and a pair of steals; and Minyo collected eight points and dished out a pair of assists.

Monaco led all scorers with 25 points, while grabbing six boards and handing out six assists. Mamarella recorded 10 points; Drapcho scored eight; and Kyle Dummermuth tallied six points and had a team-high 10 boards.

Dover held a significant advantage on the glass, pulling down 32 rebounds to the visitors' 14. Meadowbrook shot 18-of-39 (46 percent) from the field and 5-of-12 (41 percent) from the foul line. The Tornadoes hit 19-of-46 (41 percent) of their field goals and 16-of-21 (76 percent) of their foul shots. The hosts also forced 10 miscues, while only committing five.

BYESVILLE -- Happy Birthday, Coach.

Meadowbrook High presented Coach Keith Arnold with a victory on his 39th birthday, picking things up in the second half to defeat visiting New Philadelphia, 47-39, in an East Central Ohio League clash.

The Colts (12-6, 6-5 ECOL) bounced back from an 11-point road defeat to league-leading Dover just 24 hours prior and avenged an earlier 56-36 defeat at the hands of the Quakers (7-7, 3-5 ECOL), who hadn't played for two weeks because of the weather.

"New Philly had a long break and we were coming off a tough game (Thursday) against Dover," related Meadowbrook's Arnold. "The first half was kinda ugly, but we picked it up in the second half. I was proud of our effort playing back-to-back nights."

The teams slogged to a 7-7 first quarter deadlock, combining for a 5-of-22 shooting performance.

It didn't get a whole lot better in the second period, but Meadowbrook managed a 13-9 edge to go on top, 20-16, at the half. Senior Jeramie Neff had a five-point quarter for the Colts.

New Philly opened the second half with a 6-0 run to move on top 22-20, but it was all Meadowbrook from there.

The Colts closed the round with a 13-1 advantage, getting five points each from Neff and Ethan Shriver and a three-point play by Steven Minyo, to push out to a 33-23 lead heading to the final frame.

Despite five fourth quarter turnovers, however, the Colts never allowed the Quakers to get any closer than eight points down the stretch.

"We didn't defend real well in the post on the first couple of possessions of the third quarter," Arnold offered, "but we got better ball pressure after that and that helped us get control of things. We executed and played with discipline tonight."

Neff closed as the game's leading scorer with 14 points along with five rebounds while Shriver had 11 tallies and nine caroms. Minyo chipped in eight markers and senior guard Logan Pepper enjoyed a nice floor game with seven assists.

Cody Cox led the Quakers with a 12-point night while John Stephenson notched a double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds.

Meadowbrook hit 17-of-43 field goal attempts (39.5 percent) compared to a 13-of-37 effort (35.1 percent) for New Philly. The Quakers had a 31-25 rebounding edge and were charted with 15 turnovers to 11 for the Colts.
