Snow, Snow, Snow

Seems we just get cleared of snow and here comes the next round. For most people that is the extent of battling the winter and its climate gyrations. For the village, its just the beginning of many months of work. If the weekend was any example, it is going to be a long spring.

There were major leaks on the north side of town and the south side of town and several places in the middle. We had not one or two crews going, but three were working feverishly to stem the tidal wave -- no tsunami of leaks. This morning we are being fed water by Cambridge to the industrial area just to catch up in the tanks. Most residents, other than the effected areas, were unaware of all the flurry of activity.

Expect more though as the ground has taken a beating this year with the frost and heavy weather conditions. Manmade problems such as the valve leaks caused by snow trucks hitting the covers as they were exposed in the asphalt will be taken care of rather quickly. However, the slow leaks created from the ground hooving and turning will begin to appear as the conditions turn from snow to rain and warmer weather. The guys will have their work cut out for them.

Additionally, an old sore has reared its ugly head again. Glass Avenue is the main artery to the sewer plant with all of town's waste water flowing through it. Ten years ago we had to dig up between Eighth and Ninth streets and create a concrete bridge 20-feet below the pavement as the sewer line was very near or in a vast underground quicksand. It worked, but as of this weekend it now appears that at the end of the patch we are starting to see the first of a new area between Ninth and Tenth begin the steady decline into the swamp.

Just what we needed. But, this time the guys have been very proactive and began the investigation to see if indeed this will be a major problem. And, if it is, then how do we approach fixing it in a timely manner at the most effective costs. This was all done over the weekend with ideas and possible solutions being floated even before I reached the office.

Randy Mercer briefed me as soon as I got in. I learned that he had even driven a dump truck for five hours to help out yesterday. All this was done before he left for Cleveland to see his brother who was taken back into the hospital again after a sudden downturn yesterday. I really appreciate he didn't leave his post until everything was accounted for and turned over to me in his absence. My prayers go with him and his family.

I mention all this because I know there will be times in the next several weeks and months ahead that some of us will be inconvenienced. However, we do appreciate you reporting any mysterious water running in the road or even your yard as this spring begins to take affect on our old an antiquated line system. We will be there as soon as we can. Thank goodness our next several years are planned to replace a lot of the system. It is needed.
