Meadowbrook beats Cambridge, then suffers five straight setbacks

CAMBRIDGE -- A pair of late runs lifted the Meadowbrook High Colts past county rival Cambridge, 6-4 in an East Central Ohio League match-up at Cambridge City Park.

Trailing 4-3 entering the sixth frame, the Colts pushed across a pair of runs to take a 5-4 lead over the 'Cats.

With one out, senior Devon Cork coaxed a walk from Cambridge pitcher Nick Snellgrove, junior Cole Pennington then followed with a solid single up the middle to put Meadowbrook runners on the corners. Junior Kyle Roberts then stepped up and delivered in the clutch, smacking a triple to right-center to plate both runners.

"It's usually a back and forth battle when we play Cambridge," Meadowbrook coach Steve Norman said. "Tonight, we were fortunate to come on the top."

Once he was given the lead late, Meadowbrook starting pitcher Jeramie Neff took care of the rest, allowing just a pair of singles in the final two innings to pick up the win on the mound.

Neff went the distance to improve to 2-1 on the year, finishing with one strikeout and allowing no free passes.

"Once we got that late lead, Jeramie did a nice job of holding them down the rest of the way," Norman added.

Snellgrove (0-2) took the loss for Cambridge, finishing with nine strikeouts and one walk in a seven inning outing.

Meadowbrook (3-2, 1-1 ECOL) was led offensively by Pennington and senior Logan Pepper with a pair of singles each.

Senior Tyler Hardesty swung the big bat for Cambridge (2-2, 0-2 ECOL) with a triple, two singles and an RBI, while sophomore Jimmy Antalis stroked a double and single with an RBI, and senior Dillon VanDyne chipped in with two singles.

Dover 12, Meadowbrook 2

BYESVILLE -- Visiting Dover High used a big seven run third inning outburst to register a 12-2 victory over the Meadowbrook Colts in East Central Ohio League action.

Colts' starting pitcher Heath Shriver (1-1) absorbed the loss, while Andrew Bache picked up the win for the Quakers.

Dover (4-2, 3-0 ECOL) was led on offense by Evan Cameron with a double, two singles and three RBI, while Kyle Dummermuth laced three singles and tallied a pair of RBI.

Meadowbrook (3-4, 1-2 ECOL) was paced by Logan Pepper with two singles and Tate Richardson with an RBI basehit.

River View 3, Meadowbrook 2

BYESVILLE -- Host Meadbrook jumped in front early, but River View rallied to post a 3-2 victory in East Central Ohio League action.

The Colts tacked on a pair of first inning runs to jump out to the lead, but the Black Bears tallied a pair of seventh inning runs to gain the win.

Jeramie Neff (1-2) suffered the hard-luck loss for Meadowbrook, allowing six hits with six strikeouts and one walk in a seven inning outing. Brandon King was credited with the win for River View, allowing only one hit with six strikeouts and five walks.

River View (4-4, 1-2 ECOL) was led at the plate by Jason Hammond with a pair of singles, while Mike Adams knocked in a pair of runs with a double.

Tate Richardson stroked a double for the only hit of the contest for Meadowbrook (3-5, 1-3 ECOL).

Union Local 9, Meadowbrook 3

Union Local 10, Meadowbrook 0

BYESVILLE -- The Union Local Jets had little trouble with host Meadowbrook, holding the Colts to a total of four hits in weeping a doubleheader by 9-3 and 10-0 final scores.

Devon Cork led the Colts (3-7) in the first game with a single and two RBI. Heath Shriver took the loss after striking out four with four walks.

Andrew Barbina struck out seven to get the win for the Jets (7-2).

In game two, the Jets used a seven-run third and never looked back. Myron Jellison collected a pair of doubles with an RBI, while striking out eight for the pitching win.

Kyle Roberts had a walk and a strike out for the Colts to take the loss.

Cork and Tate Richardson each singled for Meadowbrook.
